Week 4 of 26 – Mind on what Matters

 

I know that there are many people out there who have experienced health-related frustrations similar to what I have felt for the last several years. I know this because I am hearing it more and more often from friends, family and readers of this blog.

 

“I just can’t seem to make progress no matter how hard I try.”

 

“All I want to do is sleep.”

 

“I can’t sleep.”

 

“I don’t have time to go to the doctor.”

 

“Why can’t I stick with eating right and exercising?”

 

Believe me, I get it. And just because I am on this guided tour toward optimal health, it doesn’t mean that I don’t still get these feelings of frustration.

 

But what’s different for me now versus where I have been in the past is this one thing: I have shifted my mindset from a sprint to a marathon.

 

I mentioned to Chelsea yesterday that although this past week didn’t result in any discernable progress despite giving it 100% effort (truly  . . . 100%), I wasn’t discouraged because unlike when I was doing this journey on my own, I’m not going to throw my hands up and surrender. No, this is about my health for the long (very long) term.

 

No more short-term thinking for this girl. No more meaningless goals that offer only minimal, unlasting joy (i.e. my class reunion is in two months; I’ll quit drinking during Lent, there’s a special running now on a gym membership).

 

For me, it’s about the goals that bring my real, heartfelt emotions to the surface:

 

“I want to see my great grandchildren.”

 

“I want to stay off medications and lead an insanely active life.”

 

“I want my children to enjoy planning my 100th birthday party and I want to dance all night.”

 

What is it that drives you to pursue greater health? Take time to feel it deep in your gut, where any alternative to that desire is simply unacceptable. Write it down and look at it every morning so that you focus on it every day.

 

In my session yesterday with Chelsea, we discussed how optimal health is like working a puzzle. We are still in a stage of discovery, which is why Chelsea and Dr. Huber decided to order more bloodwork and a hormone test to see exactly what is happening.

 

Sometimes there just aren’t quick and easy answers and patience is required. We have turned into a culture of instant gratification, and when it comes to your health, that’s a dangerous mindset.

 

I recently watched a Tony Robbins video on how to disrupt self-sabotage. From this, I recommend the following exercise:

 

  1. In a notebook, write down all the things that not being in optimal health cost you. In other words, what CAN’T you do if you are not in good health? What activities, adventures, and experiences do/will you miss out on if you are not healthy enough to participate? What price are you paying right now and what price will you pay in the future?
  2. In this same notebook, write down all the things you CAN do if you are fabulously fit. What are your dreams and aspirations for your life that will require you to be healthy? What are the rewards now and in the future?

 

Work hard to feel, deep in your gut, the pain of not being able to do the things you want to do, now and in the future. And then, with equal or greater intensity, feel the pleasure of living your life with complete abundance, taking advantage of everything that has been offered to you. The goal here is to move toward the pleasure and away from the pain.

 

With that, I wish you a week ahead of soul-searching toward the creating the life you most desire.
